Picture this - endless fields of pristine white snow faraway from any semblance of civilization, dazzling sunsets, bitterly cold air, deodars that threaten to pierce the sky and magnificent Himalayan peaks standing guard over a tiny little cottage replete with the fragrance of fresh pine where you nestle to a hot cuppa and need nothing else! Enticed enough? Well. Welcome to Auli. Nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas, nature has bestowed Auli with everything that befits a perfect Himalayan break.

You can feel the exoticness of the experience that awaits you right from the moment you cross Haridwar and travel on the Badrinath road. For a stretch of 30 odd kilometres beyond Rishikesh you can see rafting enthusiast wading though the rapids on the Ganga and in case you have time to spare you can indulge in the sport which is a great way to bond together. Further up is Devprayag where the two heavenly rivers, Alakananda and Bhagirathi join to form the holy Ganga. Next you pass through the bustling town of Srinagar ahead of which lies Rudraprayag which is the confluence of Alaknanada and Mandakni. Now the road continuously plays hide and seek with the meandering Alaknanda through many quaint hamlets to bring you to Joshimath.

The experience of travelling to the alpine meadows of Auli from Joshimath is highly romantic. You have the choice of driving on the steep snow covered road to reach Auli or take the Gandola lift. Opt for the Gandola and cuddle up with your companion to absorb the ethereal Himalaya vista that envelops you. Driving up is equally thrilling as the steep narrow road covered with ice sets the perfect mood for adventure.
