Spirituality is a way of life in Ladakh - the land of high mountain passes. Had it not been for the deep rooted spirituality, Ladakh may have been a land devoid of any living beings, at least the sentient kinds. How else can we explain humans living in such hostile conditions? The mercury dips far below zero in winters. Harvest takes place only over a period of four months. Winters keeps the region snowbound for at least half of the year. Air is highly rarefied. Nomads are always heading in search of greener pastures. In the midst of all this, the one thing that remains constant is – spirituality. No matter where you go, chances are that you will find a monastery perched atop a hill, overseeing the land and its people. In these monasteries a deep sense of faith and spirituality is inculcated in the people. Lamas who follow a strict regime of faith and study guide the inhabitants in matters of everyday life and help them overcome adversities of all kinds. Oracles descend to some monasteries to make prophecies about the land and future events. In short, the deep-rooted faith of the people helps them to survive the harshest conditions. In fact, the followers of Buddhism believe that the more hardships they face the better human beings they become. The more they help other humans, the more joy they get. Such is the way of life in Ladakh. ‘Holy High’ is designed to give you a deep insight into the ever-present spirituality in the region and understand the tenets and forms of Buddhism practised in the region. It also goes on to give you an insight into the amazing art and architecture of the region.
